I'm seeing many auctions for this coin finish under issue price. I bought one and returned it. My candy cane was long and thin. It was not worth the issue price, I had high hopes for this coin. The other glass embellishments are beautiful. Had the candy cane been fatter and only $100 I would of kept it. My opinion this coin is way over priced. However, if I find a nice cane under $100 with shipping I may buy it for my collection. The candy cane in the advertisement on this site is a nice example. Too bad they weren't like this one, I understand they're all different due too being handmade.

I think I was lucky in that my candy cane is actually quite plump. Despite all this, I still regret purchasing one. I should have passed on this.

I really wonder if they will continue with the release plan. I counted 40 sell outs and it leaves how many still selling?It would be a major waste of resources if they needed to melt a third of all coins produced. Lately we've seen coins that were awaiting status come back a few times already. This was unheard of the past yr or so. People by now have used up their disposable income with so many releases this yr. I know I have, I will get the 1 Oz O Canada and the Great Lakes and $20 4 $20 in 2014 and that is all. I've gone way over budget since sept with all these pricy releases.
I was reading an old coin forum from back in 2005, people were complaining about how expensive the 1 Oz coins were @$53. They also didn't like the large number of releases. I found it humorous people commenting on $53 an Oz being expensive or too many releases. I wonder if any of those folks buy from the mint today and how many coins?
The other thing I've notice happening, the vocal flippers like rock daddy or elk slayer are silent. There is a whole bunch of reseller that don't post anymore, can this be a warning sign of buyer fatigue. There is way less talk regarding flipping, than last jan - April. It's very nice not reading argumentative posts.
However, the replacement issue of quality control is concerning. Many people have received defective coins, this should not be happening. The frosting on proofs is not near the quality; of the silver dollars of the 80's/90's. someone on the forum commented a long time ago, the queen looks like she has a rash. It's true, now all I see is a rashy queen, unlike the older proofs. Now with postage increasing are people going to want to buy, expensive coins of questionable quality?. I know I have reached my saturation point. I will switch to coin roll hunting to satisfy my collecting urges. It more affordable and full of surprises! I have more than enough coins too look at and study, and all in 1.5 yrs of actively collecting. I will trim the dead wood and enjoy the rest!!

@ pocket change 50Thank you for your well thought out post, in which you raise a lot of interesting points. I'm starting to lean in the same direction as you. My wife and I envision spending a lot less on coins next year and just enjoying the ones we already have.

Of the 40 sellouts, most of these coins are in dealers hand, as recently by all the discounts by major dealers this is the problem upcoming, why buy any future issue from RCM six weeks latter discounted prices. Also out of the 40 sellout many or too many commissioned coins, equal artificial sellout.

I saw some listing on Kijiji for this coin for only $135-140. I still do not want to get one for my collection. :)
After the "Fall" of this coin. Do you all think they will make another Venetian Glass coin?

Nice post 'Pocketchange50' As Numoose said... your post has reflected my thoughts. I wonder, if the excessive production this year is the mint's ways of curbing the flippers? There is still a lot of talk "Can't make money on this or that"... but you are right, it is greatly reduced from previous years. The comment of 'artificially' selling out (ie Dealers have bought up the slack) says a lot, and was my contention with the flippers. As they pushed a sell out at the mint, then offered more and more on ebay, is where I compared them to scalpers for concert or sports tickets. A risky proposition to say the least.

Its not flippers that's destroying this market, its the RCM with their endless bad themed coins, in the last release 3 of the coins the 5 oz. beaver, caribou, and pond hockey coin were commissioned by one dealer. Take the 5 oz. beaver, why do you need another coin with a beaver swimming, they start a new maple spring series, nice coin but the second design looks terrible and out of theme. Remember the piedfort maple leaf, limit one for mc, a commissioned coin, looks good on the RCM book for short term gain.

@pocket change 50,
I agree with your thoughts. And where is rockdaddy and elkslayer? I have not hesrd from them for a long time.
I suppose they have seen the light, the days of flipping coin are over. People are getting wise, knowing they can get the coin cheaper over time. Coins that are sold out seem to come back again.

Yeah, although I'm only interested in collecting and holding, I agree that the flipper boom or pyramid-type scheme is pretty much over... I'm in the camp of buying less coins next year and trying to avoid the hype. Only buy what I really like. And I'll try to save up for and wait it out for the big discount day: BLACK FRIDAY!!
