I can't see how any ebay dealers can continue to offer free shipping next spring when stamps go up to $1.00 each or 10 for $8.50, plus I assume corresponding increases in other fees as well. And when they eliminate delivery to your front door as well and force everyone in all urban areas to use a communal box... it's like Canada Post has decided to kill itself quickly rather than slowly bleed to death.

When is this increase due to happen? It's hard to believe as they just increased the rates this year!! It's really making it hard to buy and sell through the mail! Am I reading correctly a common letter will now cost a dollar to send, it's an increase of .37 highway robbery. Did I also read correctly, people in cities will not get delivery to homes or apts, but use the community mailboxes like what happens in small centres like Hinton? I get my mail at one of these community mailboxes. I really miss the door to door service I had in Edmonton!! Where did you hear this news?

I don't have the article in front of me, but I believe the price is rising to something like 85 cents if you purchase a certain quantity of stamps, but if you only buy one, it's $1. I think this happens in March 2014.

Its not really a big issue. They already deliver mail like this to many parts of the country and have done so for 20 + years. It just takes getting use to.

Only stamps are going up in price, not the price of packages. Buy some permanent stamps before the price goes up.

@coin-chick: parcels are not going up, just as it is stated in the articled YOU linked.
Prices for parcels and for addressed and unaddressed advertising mail are not affected by the Lettermail increase.
Permanent stamps will NOT be removed.

Pardon me.... All letters of all sizes to all locations are going up.... To my knowledge permanents are to be yanked off the shelves. My local PO said they aren't being replenished at all.

If you take a long hard look at the value behind a postage stamp, even at $1.00 it is a phenomenal value. Just think, you can send something from the Yukon all the way to PEI for a buck. We are even more spoiled here in the U. S. - 46 cents and you can mail a letter from Key West Florida to Hawaii, which must be at least six thousand miles apart.
From an outsider's standpoint it seems that Canada Post is at least willing to do what it takes to remain financially viable. Here in the States the Post Office does not even have the courage to close a two-person operation in a town of 300 summer residents and maybe 50 in the winter.

I have no problem with these increases. As justanothercoinaddict said, we are spoiled by these prices. For a letter to travel 1000 kilometers across the country for only $1...thats amazing. Door to door delivery? Get up and walk ! For the not able elderly or disabled, I agree they could have come up with a better solution. But really, the distance is not that far, can always ask a nice neighbor to get your mail for you.

I have been pulling mail out of a communal post-box for 10 years... it is not that bad. But the rates? I shudder to think what foreign postage is going to increase to!

If a recipient needs to sign for a delivery (Xpresspost, registered, etc.), will they always need to go to the local P.O. now? What a drag.

There is going to a lot of pushback to this. Canada Post is taking away something that people have had forever. Better they cut service back to 3 days a week, or 3 days one week and 2 the next so a letter carrier will be twice as efficient, but charging more for less is not a good business model.

What do you mean with the end of Canada Post? Do you have another option?DHL? It's a monopoly, you use it or you use it, you choose.
