I found a strange looking quarter while searching rolls this morning.

1991 Obverse

1991 Reverse

Looks like a well worn 1991 Quarter, yes? Now take a look at the edge.

The edge is recessed into the coin. It looks like a mini oreo cookie.

What the heck? Has anyone else seen a quarter that looks like this?

It spent some time in an acidic environment, the copper core is much more reactive than the cupronickel clad layers.

Wouldn't the reeded edge be worn flat if that were the case?

Nope. Consider that the acid would eat everything away at the same rate; the shape of the reeding would be preserved the whole way through as a result.
