I posted another post on a 2001 Panda Coin and this post is for the same thing. Is this coin counterfeit or is it real. I am a little more confident that this coin is real compared to the 2001. This coin is a 2011 Silver Panda coin. Everything looks to be authentic but I would love to have more eyes take a look other than mine. I have just started collecting coins and found this in the bottom of a box I got at an auction. Please give me your in site on whether this is real or not and your reasons for saying either. Thanks a lot I appreciate it. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Again , like the 2001, sharper pictures would help, but this one also looks real.
With a mintage of 6,000,000 as compared to 500,000 for your 2001, this one is far more common and not quite as much of a premium over spot as the other one is.

go google and see if there are diagnostics! Sometimes I hear the fakes look very close to the real thing!

All the diagnostic are correct, the steps to the Temple of Heaven are right, the tower is right, the script is right, no inconsistant spacing between letters or numbers. The panda fur is the right coarseness, the panda eyes are right.
As I said, looks real to me.

I don't think anyone on this or any other forum can conclusively tell you if it's real or fake without handling it. Sorry.

Nickels guy has a collection of fake bullion and other coins. He would know, I believe he has some fake pandas. He keeps up to date on counterfeit coins, as he's very active in trying to stop the import and selling of Chinese counterfeit coins. He has contacts with the Canadian police that deal with counterfeit items. He gives talks and recently was selling a CD with over 400 images of counterfeit coins. He's over in the 1st Canadian sub forum. Maybe someone can get mike to look at this thread.

I actually got a fake 2001 or 2003 Panda a few years back (can't remember which). IIRC, it came up about 8-10 grams light on the scale. I also received 2 fake 2008 China 10 Yuan Olympic coins. They were not only light but also missing the Yuan symbol (can't believe I missed that on the ebay pic). I shipped the first off to the FBI in Portland OR. From what I gathered, the officer who handled the case couldn't care less. He didn't even ask me which vendor sold it to me on ebay. Probably would have been more interested if it had been counterfeit American money.

When I started collecting Pandas years ago, I bought a counterfeit panda at an auction. It was a 1989. There was too much space between the a and the g on the obverse and the fur on the panda was too course . The auction listed it as a 1oz silver panda coin, they claimed they never said it was a real Chinese Panda. I got stuck with it.
Since then I have educated myself on Pandas and have declined to buy many counterfeits. I see nothing wrong with this coin, and would not hesitate to buy this one. While this one is only worth about $35-$45, your 2001 due to it's low mintage, would be worth $75-$100 , if it wasn't for the gold gilting I would make you am offer. . For everyone, you can't take test shavings and XRF every coin you see at auction or at the LCS. If you are going to collect a specific series, education is your best defense. Panda's are 40mm and 31.1 gm . Learn to spot indicators. I have seen may fakes and to an educated eye, they really weren't hard to spot. It makes me sad how people can collect a whole series of one coin, and spend thousands of dollars , but still have no clue how to spot fake.

Hi, One of the best methods of testing silver that I've had very good success with is the Magnet Slide Test. To find a powerful and small magnet, I dismantled one of my headphone sets (earbuds works great too), and removed 2 strong magnets. Put your coin at a 45 degree angle and place the magnet on the top of the coin, let it slide down. If the magnet falls quickly, the material that your coin is composed of is not silver. On the other hand, if the magnet slides very smoothly and slowly with friction, your coin is indeed composed of silver.
Please note that this test will work with silver of lower purities all the way down to 40%. I hope this helps and good luck. Let me know if you need help.
