Does anyone know what's happened to the reverse of this coin? The obverse looks normal, but the reverse has this strange spatter all over it. I actually find it quite attractive, and it is nice to have something that looks different from the norm, but I'm perplexed as to the cause:

Thanks for looking!

It looks like it is re toning after having been harshly polished

Polished to what end, I wonder.

Retoning is a new concept to me - perhaps there's hope yet for coins that have been purged in vinegar and salt.

How about this one? The field is also somewhat unusual:

This side of the coin has a very attractive, mirror-like surface, so the aesthetic effect is much more pleasing than with the Bombay penny shown above.

The '42 looks like it has suffered from ?intentional environmental damage.

Quite possibly. I don't consider my own answer definitive.

How about the second one. How would you achieve that effect?

I'm not too sure Jimjamtwo, but there seems to be a very very straight line across the bottom of the second coin as far as the "pattern" is concerned. So my guess would be it's the effect of some sort of adhesive tape over the coin over time.

The Elizabethan penny has been hand rubbed with something.
That is why the fields behind the lettering and close in around the effigy are differently toned.
