I just got this Tunisia 1953 10 Franc in the mail today. Was looking forward to it for a long time. I'd like to get opinions on whether or not it's been cleaned. The coin is very proof-like and I am caught between two opinions: 1) It's been wiped with a rag at some point. 2) I've seen similar lines on a PL Morgan dollar.

There are a lot of lines but they don't really seem to go over the devices. The coin doesn't have a lot of devices, though. Also, the direction of the lines seems to change as the tilt of the coin changes.

I'll be bummed if it's cleaned, but it's better to know, I suppose.

Thank you!

Nice coin

looks like a PL to me RE lines maybe a wipe but many years ago about 30 I bought a collection of world coins all stored in a old type
coin cabinet velvet lined each draw had 20 or 30 places
and every time you pulled a draw the coins would slide ever so slightly
maybe that's your answer

yours

I don't think cabinet friction did this. If the lines are just on the fields it could be a badly polished die.

Thanks for the opinions, guys. Hope more keep coming. One thing to say about this coin is that they only minted maybe 1700 of them. I guess they could have used dies from a previous year and fixed the date. If they only printed 1700-ish, it would stand to reason that a high percentage would have some level of PL look to them, right? I do not think this would get a PL designation, but it looks like one of those Morgans that I sometimes think is PL but the TPG doesn't agree. PL-like.

Die polish lines on PL and specimen coins are typically uniform in one direction (usually vertical). On this coin they seem to change direction and do not appear very uniform, so I'd go with a wipe.
