I do NOT think it is an elliptical die clip, because blanks of the 50 cent coin were cut with a 12 sided blank cutter. I would not expect to find 20 cent type reeding on the edge of the coin. Perhaps we are all getting a little bit too complicated here. I am getting around to thinking that it was simply a 20 cent blank that was fed into a 50 cent coining press. Check to see if it is nominally larger in diameter than a 20 cent coin. That would mean it has spread out a bit, in order to fill the space meant for a 50 cent coin. The blank was not centered perfectly in the coining press. As the dies locked onto the blank, some of it has managed to spread to meet the 50 cent collar. I would expect to find that where the 50 cent sides meet there would be obvious rounding at the meet point. A photograph of the edge should prove this. Smaller blanks meant for larger coins are not extremely rare. I have 5 or 6 of them, all from The Royal Mint in Llanstrisant.

The second photo did not raise any problems for me with it possibly being real... However I think much more detailed photos would be required to try to make a conclusion. If it's real, I think the placement of the blank would be just random and that is just the place it fell. Assuming that it is -slightly larger diameter than a 20c -slightly thinner than a 20c -weighs the same as a 20c I think the chances are good that it is not PMD. What does everyone else think?

i have tried in vain to get a photo of the top edge but the camera technology in this house hold is a bit average, I have though borrowed some verniers as well as having the coin on a flat surface against both 50 and 20c peice. the coin is the same thickness on the flattened edge as a 20 and is flattened out at the far end. looking at it against a 50 it is very obvious the 50 is a lot thicker, the verniers also show it to be the same thickness as a 20. I believe it is a 20 posing as a fifty

This is shaping up to be a "Mint Sport" coin. Send it off to PCGS and get it verified and slabbed is my advice

Mint sport, and various other names,is where Mint Employees play around with the presses, like manually putting the wrong blank in a 50c run which may have happened here.Rarely happens these days, apparently,as cameras and increased security and dismissal threats makes it difficult to get away with skylarking. Slabbing is where a Coin is graded by "Experts" and escapulated in a plastic box/sleeve.Its been around in one form or another for 50 years or more but has really become popular the last few years, probaly because of the glut of clever Asian fake coins, heaps of Info. on the Net.
MERRY XMAS...all.

By the way I have a 50c coin struck on a 20c planchet. They are not mint sport and they do happen. It's just contamination of blank hoppers.

The OP's coin looks quite genuine too Trout.
The coin was bought. We also have some 10c struck on 5c planchets that were pulled straight out of a roll. There are a number of 2c on 1c planchets that were also found in rolls. So these errors do happen.
