Learning from the 1851 N17 debacle here is another up for variety attribution confirmation/assistance. I know the coin is pretty ugly. Corrosion, odd toning from a cleaning, the date is half gone, but its old and is my first pre 1800 US coin. I bought it from a LCS, the dealer had simply put 17_ _ on the flip and priced it $45. I guess after ruling out 1799 that was all that mattered. Being that the date is half gone, an obvious first thought would be S-125. I didn't want to repeat my earlier mistake (See 1851 post), I decided to be more thorough. Starting with 1796 rev '97 I ruled out each possibility looking at tons of images. For the '96 date I looked closely at S-100, S-113 and S-114, but ruled them out. I then went to 98 and there really wasn't any that seemed close. What I had left were the following possibilities from 97: S-122, S-125, S-126, S-127, S-131, S-132, S-133, S-139, S-140, S-141.

The coin is so corroded I couldn't tell if it was stemless or not! Had to decipher it using other identifiers.

Anyway, I am at S-125, having ruled out the others after a more in depth analysis. Can an expert out there confirm? What sold me was that despite the poor condition of the reverse, the E in ONE and the T in CENT seem to match up with what one would expect for an S-125. I ruled out S-126 and S-127 because the first 1 in the date is too low compared to the 7. Also, the die clash is present under Liberty's chin.

I can't second that vote for S-125. Look at the top of the wreath, where the tips of the top two leaves almost touch. On your coin, the gap is just about lined up with the gap between E and S in STATES. Focus on S-123, 131, 132, 133, 139, and 140.

Philadelphian, thanks for your suggestions, here is what I have found out:

S-123, the obverse date positions don't match my coin. Specifically the bottom of the 7 and the bottom of the first one, they should be closer with the 7 angling closer towards the bottom of the one. I don't think its S-123

S-131, the 'RT' in LIBERTY on the obverse is too far forward (to the right) of Liberty's hair in my coin, and my coin is missing the Cud typically found on the obverse to the left of Liberty.

S-132, same as with S-131 with the 'RT' in LIBERTY. Additionally the 17 in the date have bases that are at the same level whereas in my coin the base of the 7 is noticeably lower than the base of the 1. Also the 9 in my coin the base is closer to the 7 than in S-132.

S-139, the date spacing is off, 'RT' is angled differently.

S-140, the 'RT' in LIBERTY on the obverse is too far forward (to the right) of Liberty's hair in my coin for it to be S-140. Date spacing is off as well.

S-133, I think this might actually be it. The 'R' in LIBERTY on the S-125 should be about touching Liberty's hair, in my coin it is spaced more like what is seen in S-133. The date placement of my coin appears to match S-133. Same die clashing in S-133 under Liberty's chin also present in my coin.

Thank you Philadelphian for pointing me in the right direction! Looks like S-133 is the likely variety. Anybody care to take a stab at confirming?

Haven't really worked at it yet but it is a 97 and it looks like one of the stemless wreath varieties.
