My grandfather left me this 1914 Indian head quarter. I really don't know much about it, or coins in general. Can you help me by estimating the condition and value? I took it to a coin shop to have it appraised and I am have difficulty believing the value he told me.

I forgot to mention he said he looked like an extra fine and the melt value was approximately $140. He said he'd buy it for $125. I found it hard to believe the coin would have no inherent value in of itself.

This is a nice indian quarter eagle. A better date in high grade. Yours, if genuine(these are faked a lot) appears to be around AU-58. Usually they would go for $400-450 on the market if slabbed, probably $300-$400 raw would be my guess. I would send it in to get graded and certified to make sure it is real and problem free.

 - while I am not the best at grading gold, I do not think this is XF. If your intention is to sell, I would consider slabbing it for easier sales appeal on a venue such as ebay.

Thanks for the advice. Any way I can tell real quick if it is legitimate? I have access to a high precision balance. Could I just weigh it?
Also, can you think of a reason why the coin dealer gave me such a low ball appraisal?

there is no way that is XF. That guy was trying to rip you off. It may be lower than AU-58 though, tough to grade from images. How is the luster?

Best way to make sure it is legitimate is to send it in to a TPG. Fakes of these can be really advanced, made of real gold in the right quantities. PCGS will give you the highest resale, but ANACS is adequate, cheaper faster and easier.

I'm not sure how to evaluate the luster, but it appears to be very clean without having been cleaned. I know not to do that.

IMHO the fact that the dealer was willing to pay spot tells me the dealer felt it is legitimate, even if he was low balling you. Remember dealers with brick and mortar stores have other expenses they need to cover so they will very rarely give the best price and usually negotiate hard unless you are a long term customer - granted I still think XF may be too low of a grade for it.

I agree with the above posts. Your coin at worst is an AU Details piece worth $300 retail and at best a low Mint State piece worth $2,000! It does appear genuine and lightly circulated so the value is likely around $400 retail. I'd find another dealer because the one you took it to was looking for a rip and I'm glad you ask for a second opinion.

Wowzer. I think I'll send it out to be graded. He told me that would be a waste of money. :/

you have a $300 gold coin. Maybe a few more bucks slabbed.

Find a different dealer that will send the coin out to be graded for you and go from there. I wouldn't go back he isn't being honest and is just trying to take advantage of you. Its not a waste of time to have a coin like that graded its actually better for the coin. What state do you live in I'm sure someone on here can send you to the right person to help you out.

Hmm looks to be a nice AU50-AU55. That guy was trying to scam you I suppose. This coin's value is about $300.

I'd say at least AU-58 from the pics. Would have to see it in hand to see if it would go MS-60 or 61. Looks like a nice coin and I would take it to a reputable dealer and have it sent to PCGS for authentication and slabbing.

One of the hardest coins to grade is the 2 1/2 Indians. I'd give yours a 58 based on the pics. In hand, it might be better. Value at retail should be around 350$.
