Ok, so I put a one ounce gold bar up for sale at auction, and it ends up being one by a kazu052(0). His ebay address states he lives in texas. He sends me the payment, adding $45 and asks me to ship to an address in Japan under a different name.... Immediately I start asking him questions, as I suspect fraud.

Paypal decides the payment is questionable and holds it while they do an investigation. No problem, as I am thinking they will most likely find the payment fraudulent, and we will cancel the transaction. But nope, paypal CLEARS the payment as they find the source legit.

I keep asking questions about why he wants me to ship to a different name in a different country, and he evades them speaking broken English. I purchased a shipping label and gave hime the tracking number, insinuating that I shipped the item. The very next day....I find a chargeback on his payment! Paypal is holding the money hostage, stating that they buyer never authorized this transaction. I guess I shouldn't be shocked...

Fortunately for me, although I purchased the shipping label, I had not actually shipped the gold bar yet since I had not had my questions answered....because I suspected something like this might happen. He is acting clueless about what happened, but it is clear he intended to scam me since he thought I had actually shipped the bar. I'm not sure if he highjacked this account, or is the real account holder, pretending that it was highjacked by having me ship it to a different address.

Anyways, it was a close call, and I still have my gold bar. Right now, I am determining how to respond to the chargeback, and will probably just give in to it, and make sure that paypal knows this was a scam....

Glad you didn't ship it. When you started asking questions the buyer knew he was running out of time to finish his scam. If you had shipped it, ebay and PP would have hung you out to dry (chargeback) even though PP originally thought it was legit. Selling high dollar items on ebay is too risky. Only sell items that you can afford to lose. That's sad but that's what has become of ebay.

Good intuition on the seller, it had all the signs of being a scam (no feedback, shipping to a different location, broken English).

We smart move with the tracking number, you saved yourself a huge problem.

Glad you didn't find out the hard way!

Good to hear that you followed your gut instinct and didn't ship it.

So, ebay or Paypal know that you never shipped it?

That's a sad thing to say about ebay, that it is never a good idea to buy or sell high value items of any sort, via this method.

It's not really the fault of ebay or PP; it's just that there is a small but significant proportion of society that always NEEDS to be dishonest for some reason or other.

Suggest you add "shipping to registered paypal addresses only" or some such to your listings.

Here's an idea. Tell ebay, Paypal and the buyer you DID ship it. Let them chase their tales for a while and see how they like it.
