This is an AU coin: The 1888 is a TOUGH date to find in the higher mid grades. I want to grade your example as VF-35. Perhaps XF-40 but that is pushing it.

I'd say detail is XF-40, can't tell much about the surfaces.

I'd go with XF-45 to be conservative. Despite the "gunk", it's not a bad coin for and 1888. If the price was right, I'd probably add it to my collection.

Did you just post a great southern coins as an example of an authentic grade hahahahaha they are the greatest shucksters of photo manipulation ever.

XF-45
Possibly acetone could help this coin but I'm not sure how it will react with nickel.

cheers for the input .. the reverse surface is way better than the knocked about one in the GSC pictures.
I am going to put it on for sale and I think I will do it at XF45 and see what happens cheers

The coin in this thread has an AU reverse and an XF obverse. I'll average it out and call it XF-45. With the problems the coin has, I'd guess it will sell as a low VF.
I too am actually offended that someone has posted the usual heavily doctored GSC photo-example as properly graded, and then under-graded the current coin.

I was waiting for someone to flame the GCS! Here is the coin, scanned by me: I spent YEARS hunting for a decent example and this is it. Not to worry though, as I no longer look at GCS. This is a TOUGH year to find in a high grade. I am pleased with it. Only a Barber specialist knows when to grab a Barber coin, and this one provided a lot of competition.

As John Adams says in the movie '1776: "Good God, man, you're going to have to offend SOMEBODY!" This time, hesgut, it was you. You'll get over it.

Thank you for proving my, and many other's, point. The image you've uploaded looks nothing like the GSC image. Funny how the surfaces look look completely dissimilar and detail seams to have disappeared. Your coin has almost certainly been cleaned and the detail is roughly the same, if not worse, than the original coin pictured, which you have called a VF-35. That coin has environmental problems, but I'd pay about the same for it compared with your cleaned coin. The question is, how much did you get messed up over by, by GSC. Did you pay $60-$70 dollars too much, or just $20-$30 dollars too much. You're a barber specialist? Even if you got an okay price from GSC, using THAT coin as an example proudly proclaiming "This is an AU coin" makes me feel pity.
On a side note, I actually have personally found the 1888 to be very over-rated. It's tougher to find in better grades than the later dates to be sure, but it really isn't that difficult and about akin to several other coins from 1887-1896. The coin is over-priced.
