I'm hoping for some input on what this coin may be. It is suppose to be an 1898H Canada Cent. But the size and weight and color are off. It is approx. 4.71g, 24.10mm and appears to be silver in color. The edge looks like it is very faintly reeded. I don't think it is silver, but I have not done a scratch test to be sure. I received it in an old collection I purchased. Any information or help in where to look would be appreciated!

I will take a stab and say that the reeding you see is actually file marks. That would account for the weight and diameter difference. Then they electroplated it to try to hide the file marks.

Thanks for the input chwkboy, I didn't think a 1.4mm difference would account for 1g, although it does seem like it is a little thinner than a normal 1898H. I couldn't get a clean photo of the edge, but it could have been filed and then they tried to smooth it, the "reeding" is barely noticeable. I will simply add this to my collection of altered coins.

Do a careful scratch test on the edge. Nothing to lose.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

afigment- Interesting coin might be wrong planchet. I notice the reverse is off center and the denticles run over the edge between 2:00 and 5:00, is that where you see light reeding or is it all the way around? I was also thinking of the possibility of a fake, check for magnetism.

DBM... scratch/acid test shows green, coin edge looked silver where scratched, but hard to tell for sure.

pennyman007... fades in and out all around coin, tested with an earth magnet and had no response. I have managed to take some edge photos. I suspect this is just an altered coin, but can provide close up photos of specific spots if requested. The photos are based on viewing the reverse and are 3 - 5 - 6 - 9 and 12 o'clock.
