I have been looking around at 19th century proofs. I keep coming across some grading designation of PL.

My questions are:

1. How can you tell if it is PL or PR if you are looking at a raw coin...wouldn't a PR that has not been taken care of give the impression of PL?

2. Based upon these examples, which one would peg as the proof and why?

This coin is graded MS64PL:

Proof-Like-Vs.-Proof...time-For-School

Proof-Like-Vs.-Proof...time-For-School

This is a PR64, I am not seeing how this is proof especially looking at the details and fields. The MS above looks more proof than this coin below:

Proof-Like-Vs.-Proof...time-For-School

Proof-Like-Vs.-Proof...time-For-School

Proof-Like-Vs.-Proof...time-For-School

IMO PL and DMPL are adjectives that describe a MS or business strike coin. PR or Proof is a separate or different process used to mint coins apart from business strikes.

Decades ago many proof like (PL) business strikes were mistakenly cataloged and attributed as proofs.

Often times in certain series(Bust and Seated) one can determine the difference between proofs and (PL) business strikes by dentil counts, dentil spacing, and few other diagnostic features.
