Easiest method would be to purchase a copy of what is called the Red Book by Whitman Publishig. There you could see their dates, amount minted, approximate values, and a bit more. Or you could just go to Google and type in Indian Head Nickels ( Buffalo nickels) and see what they say there. Might get a lot of info that way too.
Another method is to use ebay for an idea of what is out there.

Mike,

By using the 2013 Red Book price guide, an uncirculated (MS-63) 1938-D Buffalo nickel lists at $36. This is about the cheapest of the Buffalo nickels. Not counting weird error coins like the 1937-D 'three legged' variety, the most expensive regular coins in uncirculated condition seem to be 1918-S, 1921-S, 1924-S, 1926-D and 1927-S. Each of these are listed at over $2,000 in the Red Book. In really low grades, the 1913-D Variety 2 and 1913-S Variety 2 are the most expensive.

In circulated condition, the "key dates" are: 1913-d Type2, 1913-s Type2, 1914-d, 1915-s, 1921-s, 1924-s, 1926-s and 1931-s. A low grade complete buffalo set (AG-XF), with some restored dates, can usually be had for about $150-$200.

If you go to PCGS' old website http://www.coinfacts.com you can get a list of Buffalo nickel mintages. The website is no longer kept up to date but it still suffices without having to spend any money on books. Then you can get their value from the online fair market guide on http://www.numismedia.com.
