I never know if I'm excited or upset when these things come across on ebay. I want one so badly, but I just can't afford that kind of a pricetag.

Anyone here lucky enough to have one of these in their collection? If not, just how far back do you consider Australian coins, Australian?

The Holey Dollar and the Dump of 1813 are considered the "first coins made in Australia", and as such are highly desirable by anyone into collecting Australian coins.

I don't have either. The price of a dump always seems to be two or three times my coin budget, and as for a holey dollar, well, maybe if I talked all the neighbours into selling their houses and giving me the money...

That dump on ebay is in fairly poor condition, (apart from the crown, it's basically worn flat) and it's at $1700 with 38 minutes to go. If I were to get one, I'd want one which you can at least read the words "New South Wales". That's where it would go in my world coin album - in between New Hebrides and New Zealand.

Final price: AU$2011, equalling about US$1700. Not too bad.

Back in March 2007 this one sold at Noble's, one of the bigger auction house here in Oz, for AU$4750 plus the juice - AU$5530 total. That one's a tad corroded, but you can still read all the details. A top grade specimen sold in the same auction for AU$85,000 - that's more than the estimate for an unsold low-grade Holey Dollar in the same sale. He had a few other nice dumps in the same sale for estimates between $22,000 and $80,000 but they didn't reach the reserve.

All of which is way out of my league. I'll have to settle for a few tradesman's tokens to represent NSW in the album.

That low-grade holey dollar isn't so low grade, and I reckon it's reasonably priced. Only if I had $80k... :(
