If ebay set a fee on coin listings over, say, $50, this might drive away some of the chancers. They are hoping to make a fortune from their junk and will just keep re-listing it if it doesn't sell. But perhaps they wouldn't if they were paying a fee every time. Or maybe new sellers could pay a fee for each coin listing until they had achieved 25 or 50 satisfactory sales.

What annoys me the most is that if, for example, I search 'Error Lincoln Cent' or something similar on ebay, 95% of the listings are for worthless damaged coins, and I have to trawl though all of them before finding a genuine error coin.

The item's description offers a good look into the seller's intent...

I am hoping someone is feeling extremely generous so that I can finish my job before my time is up.

Everybody has a smartphone now. Gone by the wayside are the days of having to hook up your beige desktop with your bulky CRT monitor to your 56k modem, hoping you'll be able to upload a picture per hour.

1989 P Washington quarter Coin Error

...I contacted this seller about the above gem ... he emailed me back with a pic of another damaged quarter, asking my opinion ... he honestly is just ignorant of this subject, & I referred him to the CCF website, telling him he could get good, honest opinions here ... this fella wasn't trying to scam, he is just ignorant, as were we all at one time ...except, of course, me

I try to be nice to noobs when they ask about such coins in their first posts. I don't think that I was ever that ignernt about damage vs. actual errors, but I have made more than my share of numismatic mistakes in other ways.
