edit- I suppose remembering to post the link would be helpful http://www.ebay.com/itm/1897-O-Barb...331147196120
its been a while since I found one that I consider worthy of this thread. I REALLY REALLY hope that this coin was a lost cause already before they did it. if not
sorry for all smilies but I think they are warranted in this case, I don't think I can put my feelings into words and even if I could it would probably be the last post I posted on here

I couldn't believe it when I saw it either. even if its hiding something I still think it would of been a lot more valuable before doing this than after. As it sits now if the seller were to show up at my door with it and offered it for $20 I would laugh and offer them $5 for the novelty value.

Scarce date 1897-O Barber dime with Selectively 24K Gold and Silver Plating.

It's a shame about this coin, but I gotta ask. Who in any frame of mind would Silver Plate a silver coin?

Possibly so. I'm just thinking if you are going to go all that effort to ruin a nice coin just buff it.

The more I look at the more I begin to wonder if that's really a gold plating, it looks like someone tried to color it with a marker almost, and they missed the design and ran over the design in places.
I am going to contact him and see what he knows about it. I just wont mention that while I am "fairly interested" in the coin that interest does not include an interest in buying it.

It is plated. Whether it's gold or not is a different story. They have a solution where you can brush it on in strokes with like a paint brush and some electrical gizmo. Just looks like they didn't take the time to stay between the lines.
I kinda hope your right and it is just marker. Wow. Of all the Barbers to do that to, why one of the rarest?

Anybody want to grade this fine object: ebay.com/itm/151254400493 ? I did tell him it was probably the worst photo in ebay. There s more detail in the face on Mars. Still barely enough to tell him it was in the wrong category!!
