Seems like environmental damage, along with a possible acid soak.

I think you may be thinking it is improperly annealed/sintered/whatever. I suppose it could be but... think about it, if it was improperly annealled or was in the oven to long for what ever the reason it would have dramatic effects on both sides of the coin due to the intense even heat. Thats what I'm thinking about when I see this and if that is what your asking. you never know tho get more pictures with macro on/off and flash on/off(mostly on. Make sure the lense of the camera is level with the coin take a bunch of shots at slightly differnet angles just off ceter left/right/up/down/ square&level with the coin (if you do that five time fast you get extra lives I'm mario bros. to) You know the lense is level with the coin/flash when the whole coin lights up evenly. Do this at about 10 to 20 inches away from the coin and everywhere inbtween the range of the macro setting. make sure to change the angle just a little bit off center each time unless you see that the photo is blurry then take another pic till you get a clear shot in the lcd and move on. Sometimes I start level with the coin and move it like two-five degrees' in a arc pattern till I'm practically taking a picture of the edge. defussing your camera flash with a white piece of paper sometimes helps with taking images of coins. Then check all images and pickout the best ones!

Those are nice true color images but you need some with the flash on even if they dont look that great at first. defective plating on planchets usually doesn't have perfect mint luster and a dull strike is one of the features they have, the flash can bring out the details nicely!. If nothing else you will learn how to take some good photo's and once you review them you can determin what angles and distances give you the best photos and repeate those.
