I have these two ancient Greek coins for a very very long time, I can not remember where I got them from.
Can someone tell me if these two coins are fake or real?

to the ancients board.

Unfortunately, both are cast fakes. I'm guessing they are either not silver or they are debased (i.e. billon). The porousity and finish are what gives them away.

Yes they are both fakes.

Ancients are just like any other type of coin if you are using them as an investment. The rarer the coin along with the better the condition will bring in more money when you sell them. Ancients are a smaller market compared to say US coins so it may be a little more difficult when it come time to sell. Most of us here are collectors and don't care so much using them as an investment. It's the historical value at least to me that is important

Its more of a hobby, but you can invest in them. Theres many things which can effedct prices - war where the coins are found, economic woes and the likes often increase value. But you do run the risk of the price going down - more might be found. A war might end and a farmer who's been picking them up will suddenly flood the makret - or, if you're unlucky, an entire hoard of mint state examples of your rare coin could crop up.

Theres some good ways to invest: Uncleaned Coins. They're becoming scarce and are already rocketing in price.

Rare coins - look out for them cheap where they arent recognised and then sell them for a profit. I'm hoping ill be abke to prove my zenonis is a zenonis and pick up a nice profit for the old savings.

High grade coins - romans act on a logarithmic scale. Absolute mint state will get you an excellent price, even for common late bronzes.

As for market trends, it seems like its sitting level right now - more collectors are getting in on it, but coins are still coming out of the ground. The prices have gone way up compared to many years ago, though. I have a nice republican semis that I'm sitting on for a rainy day, so lets hope the market goes up.

Hey George, welcome to the ancients board. Like others have said, ancients are mainly a hobby. They are a relatively safe and stable place to stick your money, but you wont generally make more than inflationary return. There are exceptions of course as collecting trends change.

An interesting fact is there are some ancients that have literally kept up with inflation since the time they were made. Very common 3rd century Roman Antoninianus' for example; many are worth (in purchasing power) the same amount as when they were made. :)

BTW, an Athens Tetradrachm was my last coin purchase. Was an xmas present to myself. :)

I think ancient coins are a very good investment, as with all other types of coins the number of collectors are growing exponentially and the number of available coins is finite. Also for me coins have a historical significance which makes them a safer bet over the long term than some other types of 'art' which can be subject to fashion and changing tastes. Like any other class of coin however it really goes without saying that the rarest ancient coins in the best condition are more likely to bring higher returns. I think high quality Greek along with Roman Imperatorial coins probably hold the greatest investment potential but if you do your homework and make sensible buying decisions there is value to be had across the entire ancient spectrum. Be warned though, you might find like myself that you enjoy collecting ancients so much that you cant bring yourself to sell even if you can realise a nice profit.
