I'm looking at purchasing a few Morgans and restarting my collection with the goal of acquiring as many dates and mint marks as possible. I came across an 1878 S Reverse Morgan dollar graded by the DWM as MS-63. If purchased would it best to break it out of the holder and send it to PCGS, or is the Denver West Mint good at grading silver dollars?

By the way, the coin in question is an 1878-S 7-TF Morgan dollar Reverse-Out Slab. I'm a bit skeptical since it appears the coin isn't listed on the PCGS price guide.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH*snort*

Denver West Mint?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'm so sorry.

Um, pass it by. You'll thank me for it. At best, severely overgraded; at worst, and almost certainly, artificially toned. If there's any color on the coin, they put it there.

Reverse-Out Slab

This means nothing except that they stuck it into the slab with the reverse facing front. That's probably the side they artificially torched.

A qoute from another forum:"The "Denver West Mint" may end up being located in a jail cell in Colorado!"

Never heard of the DWM before this thread, but after doing some quick research on the internet, it appears SsuperDdave is 100% correct.

Many complaints about artificial toning and over-graded coins. Proceed with extreme caution!

That's not to say you can't luck into a good coin from them, but 1878-S is a pretty common one and you can count on a DWM coin being overpriced and overgraded. If it has color, just walk away.

After doing a 2 minute google search, I would advise to stay away from it. They grade a TON of coins that are artifically toned.
