What do you think about the "hit","scar","line" at the bottom of Libertys neck? Is that something that could make it a details grade? 345$ is BY FAR the most money I've ever spent on a coin, so even though I like it, I kinda need someone to tell me it was 345$ well spent  |

If that isn't AU then I don't know what is. Nice coin and good strike too! It looks like Liberty had some lymph nodes removed in the neck. I don't think that in itself is enough to give it a details grade.

Mid AU. 53/55. I don't think the neck mark would be a problem.

I am also borderline between AU 53/AU 55, leaning towards 55.
I don't think the scratch on the neck would get a details grade, not long or deep enough.

I grade it about $400.  Seriously, for the record. Very_nice, original AU, and a $400 coin (or better) in a reputable TPG slab. |

It has the details of an AU-58+ coin and the luster of an AU-50....so I agree with the masses, 53-55. I have an NGC AU-53 example that has stronger luster but weaker details than this example. Nice coining, I like the toning!!

Re: the 'scratch' on the neck. Every coin design has what are called 'focal areas.' These areas are where one's eyes are drawn first. With the Barber design this is where my eyes go first:  The LIBERTY and surrounding hair is the primary focus area. [A secondary focal area would be the leaves of the wreath.] The neck scratch is as far away as possible and is not distracting to me. Had the same scratch been in the areas marked by the black lines it would have been a distraction. An AU coin has been circulated and is likely to have a few minor abrasions. Bottom line: NOT a problem. " I looked at a PCGS Barber from 1898 with AU50 grade and thought they looked alike " Denken, you choose this instead of the slabbed example. I think you did very well. Will this be a type coin or part of a set? $345? Yes, a hefty amount of money. But well worth it.  --- Edit: the cheek looks very free of distractions. Also, the multiple pictures at slightly different angles afforded enough examples to study. I should add that the neck scratch, had it been on a quarter or a dime, would be more of a problem. Thank you everyone for sharing your opinion on this coin! Matthew: Well, it was not really a choice between the slabed coin and this. The slabbed coin had a BIN for over 600$ and I can't remember if they were able to ship to Sweden.  I really don't know what qualifies for a type coin or part of a set? I have a very small Collection of coins wich I hope will grow over the years. I would say that my collecting is focused on Barber coins. But that doesn't say much since I only have 4 quarters and 2 halves atm Maybe it's time for me to explore ebay abit further... |

Utmärkt! En annan Barber entusiast. Excellent! Another Barber enthusiast. A few examples of Barber coins in this condition is difficult enough. A complete set of half dollars in this condition is next to impossible. A type coin would be a single example in very nice condition. I'd be happy to give my opinion on any dimes that you might be considering. Dimes are my specialty. I have built a complete set and am now trying to upgrade it.
