I am new to the coin collecting hobby and I picked up this Half Dime for what I hope was a good price and wanted an experienced eye to tell me how good or bad I did. Thanks!

Welcome to Coin Community, bakerskyline8. Nice to have you here.

This one, I think, is the variety known as LM-5, a common one but mentioned so you'll know that these (like most issues) are studied by the die pairs used to strike them. I have it at something like Fine-15 or Very Fine-20, but the discoloration makes me think it might adjudicate as a non-original surfaces coin, an important consideration in valuing a coin. Value should be at or somewhere north of $50, and that's predicated on it being non-original as I mentioned, which reduces the value quite a bit.

VF-details. I agree with SsuperDdave in most part but I think the value of this coin is somewhat lower than $50.

to CCF!

I agree the coin has VF20 detail with surface problems. Problem-free this would be a $100 coin. As-is the retail value would be around $50 as mentioned.

You guys were really tough on this one. I am going to deviate quite a bit from the crowd here and call it XF details. I see a lot of detail and underlying luster as well in the protected areas.
Rest in Peace

Thank you all so much for your experienced opinions and input. I got it for $55 so I didn't do too bad it seems.

Not bad at all. I was hard on the grade, as well; those arguing it as better have good points. As tiny as these are, they're a tough grading subject.

I'm with Joseph on the grade. EF40 maybe 45. However the surface issues indicate a cleaning. Possibly a dug coin

I'm in the VF35 range on this one. Scratches on cheek don't help.
