Another thread has just reminded me of this piece floating around my desk:
Imitation-4-Maravedis.-Jewellery-Or-Token?
Imitation-4-Maravedis.-Jewellery-Or-Token?

It bears no date or mintmark that I can see, is well struck with a reeded edge. No traces of gilding to indicate a jewellery use, so what is it?
26.5 mm, 5.8 gr, probably brass.

If you note to the left of the shield the "M 4R FM", it is actually imitative of a late 1700s Mexico 4 Reales (though only "M" here rather than "Mo" mintmark).

I "think" these pieces, which appear with some frequency, are ca-1870 Paris-made issues, very similar in style to the frequently seen "1805" dated large buttons using a rather accurate reproduced design of a Lima 8 Reales. Most often, these served as buttons (usually seen with shank, or the remnants of a removed shank). Sometimes they are seen without as any trace of being used as a button... not sure why that is. Maybe some were distributed just as commemorative nostalgic tokens?

There are several front-back combos that I have seen the obv or rev you have there. For example, a 1798-dated portrait obverse paired with the shield-type 4R reverse... as described in this old Stack's lot:

Thank you. It's the two holes that make me think perhaps jewellery, but as I said, no traces of gilding.
