So I collect overdates, and noticed this coin on ebay.

Studying a close-up of the seller's pic, I noticed something funny about the 3 (arrow).

Sure enough, when the coin arrived, there's a distinct raised mark to the left and beneath the 3 (arrows). There is also some raised areas underneath the 2.

Thinking about it, this might be caused by several things:
1. Die damage--a gouge that has been mostly polished away
2. A repunched date using a different 3. However, on this series, the 3 digit top stroke is always as seen here.
3. The mint re-used a die from the 20s. In support of this theory--this coin type was used in the 1920s. The curved, underlying mark is distinct from the "3" digit, and it does resemble the top of a "2". The marks under the 2 could be the remnants of another digit, such as a "9".

So tentatively, I'm going to call this one an overdate: 1932/2_.

If the 3 is over the 2 and it's unclear what the 2 is over, shouldn't it be 1932/2x or if the 3 is over the 2 and the 2 over a 9 shouldn't it be 1932/29 ?

Yes, I think the 3/2 is pretty clear; I was uncertain about the last digit. But 1932/29 isn't a bad guess--lacking any documentation.

I thought I'd take the analysis a step further an put the coin under my microscope.
More details are visible, such as the doubling on the "32"--probably from 2 impressions of the date punch. (white arrows) That doubling is visible on the "32" but not the underlying marks suggests to me they were impressed at different times.
The dark arrows show those marks underneath the primary digits in more detail. There is definitely something under the 2 which was another digit.
What often happens with overdates and repunched dates: when the newer date is impressed in the die, it pushes the older digit deeper into the die.
Then when the fields get polished again, you see more of the the old digit inside the new digits, here inside the curl of the 2.
