Hello everyone, I am new to this hobby and come to you for advise. I noticed the thickness on this 2006 buffalo proof coin has a variation in thickness at different points. Is this normal?
And another coin has two red dot which I read could be copper dust at the mintage, so I will reject it. But wondering what to make of a thickness variation.
Thank you much for your advise on both concerns.

The planchet was struck VERY slightly off centre.
The die has struck next to the collar on on one end of the diameter, and has left a tiny gap for some of the metal from the planchet to squeeze past the die face, so that it forms a tiny ridge on the edge of the coin, at the opposite end of the diameter.

If you look at the coin edge on, it will appear to have slightly more thickness at one end of the diameter.
There should be no difference in weight compared to a perfect strike.
This set of circumstances would really constitute a negligible error.

Thank you for your reply Sel, so is this normal? can you have such coin and still be rated at a 70? Would this lessen the value of a coin? Not sure to return it or not.

I just want to be in denial thats all, hate returning stuff like this. Not sure on what to do or the seriousness of such issue, so I should ask, would you keep such coin?

If the slightly off-center strike or wire rim bothers you that much, there's no reason not to return a $1,400 coin for a refund in order to buy a perfect coin. There's enough of the 2006 proof to be readily available. You keep such a coin, you will always wonder about its resale value. These coins are carefully struck so there is no reason to keep a "defective" coin that you are less than pleased or satisfied with.
