Good morning!
I am just curious if anyone has insight as to why the 2012 silver Kennedys, ungraded and graded, are super inflated over list prices?
Is there something special about then? Both the 2011 and 2013 seem to have the same $20 going rate.

2012 silver proof set mintage was 395,443 add another 50,000 for the SE proof set and you have a total mintage of 445,443.
The next lowest silver Kennedy was 1995 with 549,878.

The 2012 silver is the only Kennedy I still need (until the 2014's come out). I've been watching the sell prices and I haven't found more than a couple that went under $80; most much more than that.
Although the mintage was low, I think the prices at present time are inflated and will come down. I won't be buying until they drop to under the $50 level. If after ten years or so and the price remains high, I'll submit to the going rate at that time.

denco7: as most coin collectors, sometimes I think one thing and do another. :) The trick I think is to not open up my Kennedy album and see that ONE missing coin.
Bizybackson: You are so right about the relative values of other recent mintages/prices; however where did you get the idea of the 2013's being higher priced? I just got my 2013 silver in December for $21. Have the prices spiked since that time?

Proof Kennedy are not usually priced solely in relation to their silver content....although some have had such high mintages there value is reduced to intrinsic ..and regarding the mintage...there were more 1909 S VDB's minted than this Kennedy half. Does that make them all overpriced?.... Mintage/value should be regarding the SAME coin in relation to the others of its kind..and to compare it to a 5 ounce silver coin that presently has limited followers is stretching it a tad. The 2012 Kennedy is priced the way it is because it has the lowest mintage numbers of ANY Kennedy half and its sellout caught procrastinators off guard... I believe it will price adjust after the present demand is absorbed and return to a more realistic price BUT it will/should be priced higher than its peers |

Since 2010 I have a subscription with the mint for the annual silver proof set.
That might be the way to go.

To be accurate, the lowest mintage silver Kennedy is the
1998 S matte proof. Different site show different number
It is either 62 or 64K mintage. (My avatar)
Over time the 2012 silver proof set may come down in price.
My guess would if it does, not to the level of the higher mintage
sets.
Other low mintage years, 1999 and 2008 are still holding a higher
price. Although the 1999 set has dropped a lot from of it's high
of .... I think $300.
I need another 2012 silver Kennedy .. But I am not ready to spend that premium.

While I agree, that is the crown on any all inclusive JFK set, I would still consider the 2012 as the lowest mintage of the series. Dansco doesn't even have a slot for it in their Kennedy album. |

When the announcement came on CCF that the 2012 proof sets had been discontinued, I immediately did some internet homework and saw the mintages were record lows. I went to ebay and got two of the silver proofs for ~30.00 each - and glad I did. But it figures that I started a silver proof set subscription in 2005 and then stopped it a few years later since I saw I was losing money on the deal (admittedly had no interest in proofs other than the silver value in them). So now that I missed out on the 2010, 2011, and 2012 sets, I started up again last year. I also now collect the proof halves instead of just seeing them as silver. But rest assured everyone... since I am subscribed to getting a couple sets each year, the mintages will surely climb to new heights so the coins will be easy for all to get. I will once again send too much money to the mint for things I could get for less at a later date  How much squash could a Sasquatch squash if a Sasquatch would squash squash? The engineer in me can easily get behind the $50 price point. I have all of the time in the world. Empty holes don't bother me much since the albums I just bought are full of them :)

I got lucky this time last year. As soon as I saw that they stopped minting them, I went on ebay and bought as many of the 2012 silver 2012 Kennedy's that were NGC PF69. I was able to buy 8 of them for $20 to $24 each. I just sold all 8 of them individually back on ebay this past month for $84 each :) |

I guess everyone looks at things different. I don't consider the JFK matte proof a commemorative, it just came with the RFK commemorative dollar. It was not available on it's own like the RFK dollar or other commemorative half dollars. If you wanted to put the JFK matte proof into a Dansco, you just put it in the 1998 S silver proof spot. Same as you can put Satin finished coins from the 2005 - 2010 mint sets. The Dansco albums do not tell you what finish coins to put in each hole, it just has year and mint. Then lets look at the 1996 W Roosevelt, it was not regular issue. It came only in the mint sets, and is the lowest mintage Roosevelt dime. But then it has a spot in the Dansco. I guess ...in my opinion ... you can't use Dansco to tell us what a coin is, or how the mint releases a coin to determine what it is. The 1998 S matte proof Kennedy half dollar, did not have a design change. Just a different finish. To me it is part of the Kennedy half dollar series, and is the lowest mintage. |

I agree with GR58. Although I am a Dansco fan, I counter that argument with the Red Book. It lists the 1998 matte proof with the other Kennedy half dollars, not with the other Commemorative coins. However, in the end, this is only my opinion. To each their own. Define the set any way that satisfies you.  |

Wow. Every year since my son was born in 2005 I buy a Silver proof Mint Set for him. The cost is always far above current silver value and I never expected any of the sets to go up in value. It's more of just a fun thing to keep him interested in collecting. All of which is to say I had no idea whatsoever that the 2012 was now selling for $150-$200 on ebay. Who knew? |
