As a frame of reference, this first pic is a closeup of a 2004-D 1DR-001:

Now there are similar DD's for the 2002-D (found by Coop, by the way) and 2003-D LMC's. Coop once said here on CCF that he reasoned that, since there were DD's for 2003-D and 2004-D, he should keep an eye out for the possibility of a 2002-D. Well his logic was sound and he found what he had imagined to exist (Coop, if you are reading this please correct me if I have the story wrong).

Using his proven logic, I have always keep an eye out for the same type of DD for the years 2001-D and 2005-D.

Well I found a 2001-D today that I want to fit the bill, but I am pretty sure is is just well placed MD emulating a DD. Am I correct in assuming MD here? I thought I should at least ask before I throw it back in the bank bag to be returned. All opinions are appreciated, thanks!

Side notes: There is no other MD on the coin, obverse or reverse. There seems to be notching on the right memorial planter similar to notching that occurs on the 2004-D 1DR-004.

These pics are of a 2001-D LMC:

I looked at it for some time and think you have it correct as Machine Doubling. I would still save it for now in case something else turns up. The devices look affected similar to the doubled die, but different when looking closer to the 2004 DDR. What I don't see in the images is the "DOTs" on the EPU. This might tell a different story. The 2004 dots are ellipse shaped. Here is a side by side with your images:

The doubling appears as flat shelf like on the 2001 and rounded on the 2004. I guess that is the biggest determination on my opinion on the two sets of images.
