Has anyone else come across one of these before? Are they legitimate Trade dollars or just fantasy pieces? Do they have any catalog numbers?

This is a Trade dollar (the common name for them in Canada) or municipal trade token. It was issued by the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1980. There was a mintage of 125,000 with three versions, yours appears to be the Manitoba coat of arms version. They are listed in the catalogue around $2.25 as a value, so they are quite common. There were also silver versions, but that appears to be nickel.

Oh, the catalogue number from the Standard Catalogue of Canadian Municipal Trade Tokens and Notes is MA33C.
