http://www.pcgs.com/News/pcgs-and-d...unterfeitingTwo major changes on the way for the slabs it looks like. Slab has a new hologram made in conjunction with Dupont that looks like it will be extremely hard to replicate. Slab is supposed to be more scratch resistant. Theyll also be letting older slabs be reholdered for 5 dollars for a while. Don Willis on another forum said January 27th would be the day that the 5 dollar reholdering special starts and that they will likely allow TrueView imaging to be combined with that. He expected the 5 dollar reholder special to last for most of the year but didnt give any firm dates. They also have raised the edges on the slab to protect the face of the plastic over the coin more which is a great change in my opinion. I like the look of the new hologram and am excited to see how the coins look in the slabs with the new plastic. Some sample slabs are already for sale on ebay. EDIT: If any one gets their hands on the new sample slabs I would love to see some pics Edited by basebal21 01/11/2014 8:41 pm

Great information sharing ... Thanks.
I'm not likely to 'upgrade' any of my existing PCGS slabs ... but pleased to learn that PCGS is doing what they can to stay ahead of fake slabs from China and elsewhere.

Really like the $5 upgrade deal. I will have to go through some of my " got'em cheap because the slabs were scratched and marred " collections, to see what would benefit the most from a face-lift.

OIH unless you used the express tier I'm going to guess by the time yours are done the switch to the new holder will have been made. I just got some back myself, wish I would have waited another week or two for the new ones.

I'd highly recommend getting the Trueview imaging if you're going to get the $5 slab reholder. It's $10 more per coin and as you may have noticed they do an amazing job.

Absolutely! I have a few PCGS TrueView coins and the images are a heck-of-a-lot better than mine would ever be! I wish that they would go back to the solid gasket inserts unless specifically requested.

I really like the new holographic logo. This, along with the new PCGS logo and barcode on the back make the slab look even more impressive and professional. Man, I want to get some of my coins in that new slab. This is a very good move for the company. So, are PCGS slabs counterfeited the most?

Quote: So, are PCGS slabs counterfeited the most? Yes. Fake ANACS and NGC slabs first showed up in 2007. but I haven't seen any fake ANACS slabs since the initial one and only a coupl of rounds of NGC. The Fake PCGS slabs showed up in 2008 and there have been at least three generations of fake slabs so far. But I have not seen any fake PCGS slabs yet of the most recent PCGS design with the variable color label or the secure shield design.

Do you guys think there will be a premium (e.g., additional value) to older slabs vs. the new slabs? My thinking is that the older slabs will become harder the find and some -- particularly type collectors will pay more for the 'old' slabs.

PCGS has graded 27.5 million coins thus far. There should be plenty of older slabs to go around. The community of people that collect slabbed coins is not as large as some " new " collectors would think.

UPDATE: Just checked with PCGS and you can now start sending in the reholders for the 5 dollar special. Theyll begin doing them on wednesday. The special also has a 10 dollar version if you wish to switch a standard holder to a secure plus one, but secure plus reholders and standard reholders need to be a separate order.

Quote: PCGS has graded 27.5 million coins thus far. But how many of those are repeats, or have subsequently been cracked out or crossed. For example by sheer numbers slabbed nearly one out of every ten PCGS slabs you see should be a rattler slab. Take a look at any dealers stock and you will find in the real world it is much lower. In fact most of the PCGS slabs you will see will be from the last three generations of holder, or no more than 8 years old.
