I listed 2 Seated halves in the Classic Coin Grading section that I had acquired with the understanding that they would be (1859) AU and (1874) MS-60. The consensus was that they were both more like XF-45. This acquisition was part of my on-going and oft-chronicled dateless Buffalo nickels for Seated halves trading adventure with a guy who, for whatever reason, wants to acquire a mountain of dateless Buffalo nickels. I sent him 5800 dateless Buffaloes and in return I received the two halves mentioned above and also an ANACS 1917-S Buffalo in AU. He had the two halves valued at $580 for the UNC and $160 for the AU - based on 80% of Grey Sheet bid. So - when I went back to him and told him, no, I could not accept them because I thought his grading was faulty, here is what he proposed: He downgraded the grading on both halves to XF-45 and, again, priced them at 80% of Grey Sheet, which meant that the 1874 went from $580 to $232 (!!) and the 1859 went from $160 to $120. He then threw in 3 more halves - all of them slabbed by either ICG or ANACS. The 3 were an 1846-O tall date in VG, an 1857-O in XF-40 and an 1872 in XF-45. (I also got to keep the AU 1917-S Buff!) I'm not real experienced with this series yet, but I was pretty sure the two he sent me were not graded properly. Having all of YOUR studied opinions, however, gave me the confidence to go back to him with some good ammunition and come out of this adventure feeling pretty good about what I had acquired...so... thank you CCF!!

I believe you got the best part of the bargain even before the 3 additions, very nice for you. Although it probably did take some work to acquire 5800 dateless buffalos!

I'm glad it worked out. I agree that his grading was quite optimistic on the 1874. Still you're trading a bunch of less desirable coins for a few better quality coins so I like the trade.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I'm sure he is acid treating the dateless Buffalos looking for the key dates.
