I just recently 'acquired' a specimen of the so-called "poor man's doubled die" which doubtless you are all familiar with. It still brings quite a premium, its about MS-65+ and I will likely sell it soon (contact if interested).
What the heck went so wrong at the Philly mint that year? I mean we have "the" 1955 DDO and then we have this one, which is merely a result of the dies being beaten to death and possibly corrosion.. Later die states (mines an 'earlier' one) even show a crack through the portrait. Yikes!
Are there similar examples from other years? Can someone post a pic if so? I am very curious to see. I have a pic of mine, but I have to re-take it and if I do I'll post it.

The cents from the 1950's were used way past the normal usage of the dies's life. It is very common to find these in later die states with cracks, chips, breaks and showing heavy die wear. I found 19 different examples in a die roll from different dies. They are not rare and not a doubled die. They are just cents from later die states.

Don't forget the DDO#2 for that date as well. I've found and sold a number of them over the years.
