This is PCGS Questionable Color. Does that mean they really aren't sure if the toning is legit or is there way of saying it is not legit.

What do you all think about the toning?

I honestly don't care what a TPG says about toning if I like it I will buy it and if not, then I won't. I am usually good at picking out AT. I am not sure what they are seeing as 'questionable' but I wouldn't be to concerned about it, if you like it, buy it. It's a great coin and I would consider the toning a plus.

Moved this to the US Commemorative forum.

There is no dedicated grading forum for them, but would like our commemorative experts to weigh in.

From the description on the PCGS web site, a coin receives a "Questionable Color" designation when PCGS graders believe it is likely that the tone on a coin has been "...added, enhanced or accelerated by artificial means..."

It's difficult to say from images vs. having the coin in hand, but the "electric blue" seen on the coin could be a sign of artificial manipulation. It would certainly be something I would think twice about if I were looking at a raw coin.

Also, it's interesting to see that the coin is essentially free of toning at its rim and the coloring is mostly confined to the coin's center. Many times silver coins get their toning from being stored long-term in a coin album that had a high sulfur content in its cardboard pages - such toning regularly starts at the rim and works its way toward the center.

Just my thoughts from looking at the images...

Concur with commems ... the 'electric blue' color shown on your lovely coin is a flag for any grader.

That is likely what PCGS picked up.

Assuming your photos are color accurate ... believe this coin has likely experienced some event outside of natural aging that has caused the colors we are able to view in the photos.

I have 2 thoughts: I agree with commems that the toning not reaching the edge on the obverse is odd. I wonder if the TPG saw something under a black light indicating chemical exposure.

I agree with BOTH the Nathanrch1 and PCGS opinions.
Toning MAY be questionable, buy it if you like it, but add any properly considered opinion of your own, before making a decision to buy or not.

Sorry for being somewhat of a 'fence sitter' on this one!
Well worth taking the risk, depending on the price.
