Hi folks,
For the half dollar slots, I have put in the following two coins:
Columbian Exposition Stone Mountain
Trying to decide what coins to put into the other two half dollar slots and the moderm dollar slot.
I could crack open the following that I have in mint packaging:
George Washington Half Dollar Proof (Silver) Bill of Rights Half Dollar Proof (Silver) Bald Eagle Half Dollar Proof
I rather not break out either of the two silver half dollars, so I am thinking about the Bald Eagle one or is that one worth more by keeping it the mint package?
The Statue of Liberty Half-Dollar is a low price coin that I could buy.
Is there another hald dollar that is low price that anyone could recommend if I did not want to break out the Bald Eagle coin?
For the dollar slot, I am thinking about either the Louis Braille Proof Dollar or the American Veterans Disabled for Life Proof Dollar. Suggestions here?
I do have two of the Lincoln Proof Dollar since I do have a separate one and the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set. But I do think that keeping the Lincoln Proof Dollar in mint packaging is best.
Or there is a low cost modern dollar that I can get instead if it is not a good idea to break any of these dollar coins out?
Thanks, Ken

Ken,
Your two classic commemorative selections are favorites of many collectors ... wondering why you do not simply acquire two additional classic designs that appeal to you for those slots?

Thats what I would do, but I personally find the classic ones more appealing. Then again, if you are on a strict budget, You might want to go with a couple modern ones as temporary fillers because they are generally cheaper.

If it were me, I would seek out an attractive Oregon Trail Memorial coin for one of the half-dollar slots and pursue an uncirculated Statue of Liberty half-dollar to fill the other.
For the modern dollar slot, 1989 Congress Bicentennial dollar is attractive (IMO) and can be had rather inexpensively. The 1992 Columbus Quincentenary dollar is historically important, artistically interesting and is also inexpensive.
I would definitely keep the Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set intact.
Good luck!

I second the thought of an Oregon trail half, they are simply beautiful. I have two early and two modern halves in my 7070. As for the dollar look for a design or topic that appeals to you, many are fairly inexpressive.

Thanks for the comments. Just remember that I live in England, so I can't just quickly pop into a coin shop or coin show to acquire US coins. None are close by and the few times that I have done so, I have found the selection of US coins to be few and over priced. I have purchased a few modern designs that interest me but those are the ones that don't want to crack open. Since my set has spots for x4 commemorative halves, I was thinking two older (which I have) and two modern. Thanks for the confirmation about not breaking out eitther of the Lincoln dollars. So are there any others that shouldn't be broken out that I have? I could crack open the following that I have in mint packaging: Bald Eagle Half Dollar Proof Louis Braille Proof Dollar American Veterans Disabled for Life Proof Dollar In other words, are any of those worth more now in mint packaging or does not it matter with those? Kena,
There's a coin show in my area once a month, give me a list of those modern commem you need/want and the price limit you are willing to pay for and I'll try to get them for you. The shipping cost to UK for 3oz is $3.75 and 4oz is $4.60.
Let me know if you want my help.

IMO, whether to remove coins from their original packaging or not is a matter of preference more than an economic decision.
Some collectors consistently remove coins from their packaging to place in albums (e.g., 7070), 2x2's or some other holder. Other collectors (like me) leave the coins as they were delivered. When purchasing, I would prefer a coin in its original packaging and would pay a few dollars more for it (assuming the coin itself is a nice example). Other collectors wouldn't be willing to do the same.
Bottom line, in your case, I think it would be fine if you remove the coins from their packages so that you can place them in your album. I would, however, save the packaging and return the coins to their respective holders when it comes time to sell.

As you have both the modern "silver" commemorative halves I would use them as your last two openings, keeping them all silver with two new and two older. You have a great offer from another member to be able to choose a modern dollar but if not use what you have for your dollar opening as most of the proofs are considered common and do not hold a large premium.

I bought both uncirculated and proof Washington Half Dollars from the mint in 1982. In 1993 I freed them for the 7070. I still have the original packaging and materials (as I have done for all the proof set coins and Eisenhower dollars I have freed for album use). I also have the 1893 Columbia Half Dollar in my 7070, leaving one hole free. I am leaning towards a classic for it.

I Did Dolly Madison for my modern dollar spot. In one of my half dollar spots I have also done stone mountain. I am defenitely doing Oregan trail as another. I am also going to do Baybridge in another.
Keep the sets you have and just buy some new ones to fill the 7070 holes.

I am still pondering what to do since as usual I have been given much useful advice.
I have also sent an email to SA4H to see what sort of stuff is available when he goes to a show.
