I am less than a novice to the world of numismatics, but tonight I came across something that looked interesting to me, so I did a little research and found photos of the medal for Charles Carroll's 90th b-day (or 90th year). What I came across was the item shown in the photo. I wonder if it is a stone for reproducing a lithographic image of the medal - but I'm not sure of that. If so, the question then becomes when was it done and by whom? I imagine one of the first steps in making a medal is to design the images for both sides -- could this have been part of that process or is it more likely an exercise for someone? any advice/thoughts will be appreciated. (Feel free to chuckle if this post is completely ridiculous - I said I'm less than a novice.)Thank you.

It looks like a printing block that was used to produce the image for a book. Very, very interesting piece.

That's probably the case. I found it at the bottom of a box of early 20th century railroad correspondence. I'll probably list it on ebay (if I can find the right category) and let the folks who know about these things tell me if its worth anything with their bids or non-bids. Hard to tell the age, although the one nail I can see well doesn't look like a wire nail to me - so definitely before 1900 or so. Thanks.
