well, this is another one of those issues I have with worrying if those china counterfeiters have successfully perfected their art.

I got for 11 pounds from a UK ebay seller a month ago an 1887 gothic florin that was very worn down and weighed it at 0.3 grams lighter than what ngccoin's data states.

the other is an 1887 1/2 crown I got last August (the thread appears to have died), which nobody bidded on. I'd made sure I'd checked every single detail on the coin carefully, but I didn't really think much about what looked like leftover metal from a possible, very smooth casting technique. I just took it out just now for a ring test, and it didn't sound too dull, but it didn't have a good ring either, unlike the florin. the best part is it weighs just about the same as ngccoin's data of 14.13g

weight of the 1887 florin. does the degree of wear account for 0.3gms of loss?

ok... I was using a low power flashlight so that might have made them look polished, because I don't notice any unusual lustre, except the fine scratches. perhaps I should measure the coins themselves. i'll return with the stats in a few hours

It should be noted that GENUINE 1887 Jubilee half crowns are relatively easy to obtain, in uncirculated condition. It seems that a lot of them were set aside for keepsakes by the public.

yes, that I'm aware of. but I still wonder about the bit of excess metal on the rim of the 1/2 crown between 3 and 4 o'clock. I'm wondering if that is a common feature on this particular coin or if it's just mine. I know the 1/2 crowns remained within the same dimensions throughout QV to QEII, but I'm not sure what the thickness is. I just know that they're 32mm across
