Didnt had a vf sestertius of Marcus Aurelius yet so I put in a bid and won it! Its truely a nice addition, I like these kind of sestertii! Sestertius (brass, 25,79 g). Struck 148-149 CE, twelve years before he became emperor, the coin shows Marcus Aurelius as Caesar. Obverse: laureated bust of Marcus Aurelius right, AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG P II F. Reverse: Pietas standing right, right hand over head of child, left hand holding scepter, PIETAS (in exergue) TR POT III COS II S C. RIC 1281a (Antoninus Pius); BMC 1849. I spied this one while looking to spend my ebay 'loot' ($11 !) last week. It was still only around $20 then and in fact my friend already had put it on his "watch list". So my help was more of emotional reassurance that "yes it is a very beautiful coin !". It has almost everything I like about a bronze. Thick olive green patina. The hairline is sharp and in my humble opinion the flat area on the high point is a slight weakness in the strike. I believe some of the 'schmutz' on the surface may come off (Marcus needs a Q tip for that ear canal) Throw in the rather harsh single source lighting and I feel confident it is of the "MUCH BETTER IN HAND" variety. I have purchased from this seller before and his material appears to be fresh from the fields so to speak. Best of all he won it for an excellent (State secret) price ! About half of what any dealer in NY (or Amsterdam) would want for it I am confident. It can be hard to make the jump into the deep end. I merely assured 'Dutch' that in this case there was nothing much to worry about ! The water is warm ...... come on in Report this Post to the Staff
