hello everyone. I hope all is well. I just wanted your guys's thoughts on some coins claiming to be 1893/2's.

I will be honest, I am the person who had the $51 bid in. However I didn't really risk losing any money on it as I contacted that seller and after some talking he agreed if I got it and it turned out to not be a 1893/2 that he would take it back, him paying the return shipping. The more I studied it though the more I came to think that I would most likely be returning it if I did win it and id be tying up $51 for at least a few weeks on a long shot gamble. I was actually pretty happy when I got outbid. if it was just bad pics though and in hand it looked better it would of been a nice score though. do you guys think it was a 1893/2?

this hurts me. to me it looks obvious that the 3 is simply very worn and possibley took a hit at some point. being in a pci holder certainly doesn't help it any credibility wise with me, in fact quite the opposite.
what do you guys think? are either 1893/2's in your opinions? Thanks-justin

Not a chance. In the first case, the seller himself presents the evidence that the coin is not the overdate - nice of him - and in the second link, it would not be possible to prove either way. The coin is obscured forever in the only area where differentiation is possible.

1893/2 is characterized by a curved line within the lower loop of the 3, not anything outside the 3, and the first coin should show this loop clearly if present. It does not. Furthermore, it seems that every example of this overdate has a die crack in the lower neck just above the date, and this coin doesn't have it - should be clearly visible in the detail image.

I think the final bid reflected the buyers' hesitance as well - the coin should be worth 4 times that.
