I purchased 3 when they first came out.
I personally disagree that they are not worth the £20, purely due to the fact that the face value is £20.
To a coin collector, I don't think these will ever be a must have, but I think to a NON collector, this is 'cool'.
As a reasonably new collector, I don't have many collector friends, and when I try to show off my coins, I get a lot of Yawns! But this is one coin that most people think is cool, purely through it being a £20 coin.
The funny thing is, these were selling at £40 each on
ebay at one point, considering they are still available for £20 each, I found it quite funny.
As to whether you should buy them, I would say no. I have the option to buy more, even though they are limited to 3 per person, I can get more via other friends and family, but, I see the value of them decreasing already, and I think now, if I sold them, I would struggle to get the £20 back.
I actually quite like the coins, but I don't like them any more than other coins I buy for a third of the price.
If I could go back, I would have still bought them, but I would have sold them via
ebay and made a quick buck.
I see these being like the £5 coins, that you struggle to sell for £6 now, and no 1 would actually take them to the bank and change them for cash, so just a coin that will sit in the collection gaining dust, losing more of the cool factor the older it gets, and the more they release.
Westminster coins were buying these @ £25 for a period, so they clearly plan to sell them on later at quite a premium. I think if RM were a little less greedy, and limited them to something like 50,000, then they would have sold out pre-release and the £40 per coin would have still been going, and there would be a rush for next years coin.
I don't think I will buy next years coin now, but I will at some point stick a couple of the ones I have on
ebay at £30, if they sell, I may use the profit to get the next one, but maybe not
The more I type, the less I want these coins :/
