This is something I doubt will ever be made clear to the public. We, as numismatists, already have knowledge of all the appropriate "conservation" methods - it's not like the TPG's have some secret recipe for cleaning a coin. However, regardless of the method used, there will be a prominent collector somewhere who will scream "foul!" for any method made public.

So, they don't publicize what they do, and we generally don't question the methods in order to better get along with each other.

Added: Before you go ahead and request a conservation option, you need to become conversant with what is and is not an appropriate candidate for conservation. Please post pics and questions here, for opinion.

Personally, I would never pay someone else to "conserve" my coins. At least not without knowing exactly what they are going to do and what the possible negative outcomes could be. As was previously mentioned you will likely never know what if anything it is they actually do the coin. And if you can tell that they did something to it after it is returned then everyone else who views it will also know that it has been cleaned and thus less valuable. Just my OPINION and I am sure there will be others that disagree. Maybe someone else can provide a differing opinion that will sway me but right now this pretty much sums up my thinking on the topic.
