I got this coin as UNC but it obviously has issues. The pics do make the hairlines worse, but my question is how are the hairlines so close (almost touching) the raised devices but not as apparent on them? It seems like a tiny tool was used. Is this the case? is this what is meant by the term 'whizzed'?

I am far from an expert on the subject but I agree that it looks "whizzed". Not sure exactly what was used but that isn't natural.

Its too bad some one abrasively cleaned that coin, Would have looked nice with some patina on it. It does not look wizzed, most the time wizzed coins will not have the large scratches like this one.

I have one thats Xf-AU in my collection that luckily was not cleaned...gives it that OLD look it needs.

My guess is someone attempted to clean that coin with something abrasive. Just rubing back and forth with even a soft cloth with something abrasive could do that. Something like a Comet or Kitchen Clenser type of product. Scratches are almost as if a small wire wheel was used. To bad since that coin was in great shape so why do that to it?

Definitely NOT a pristine coin! Can you send it back?

This is about as heavy as a brushing gets. It's not whizzed; that imparts a high-gloss finish to the coin. Some of these scratches are extremely deep, and I'm surprised they don't show up on the devices. Devices resist obvious hairlining better than fields because of their differing finish, and fields are very sensitive because they're so smooth. You can hairline a coin with a dry Q-tip.

Yes, I'll be returning it.

Do any types of scratches show on a whizzed coin under, say,10x magnification or is it just a totally smooth buffed/gloss look? I think I've seen coins like that but not sure.
