I came across this Wheat and it's toning reminded me of some of the other matte proof coins I've come across. On occasion a matte proofs toning looks like something out of a sci-fi film. This coin has obviously been circulated. A problem that has gone on for years. However, I am not aware of any Matte Proof Wheats of this year. Was there a different die used for this year similar to that of the SMS? It has a well defined strike porous grainy face and normal border similar to other mattes. The coin exhibits purple, gold, and the flat black is something I've seen with circulated Matte coins. Not expecting a miracle find by any means but just peeked my interest.

No pro but it does not look like a proof to me.A proof has a squared off rim and a much sharper strike.

I definetely see what you are saying John and thx for the reply. I was considering this but since it was in circulation I wasn't sure how these would be affected. However, I did think the you was a bit more square than my other 1946 wheats and the serif on the G was more distinct as with the bottom of the W. But, I am no expert as well LOL! I am familiar with the odd patina of Matte finishes at times but you never know what this coin has seen or been through

Matte proof Lincolns were only minted from 1909 to 1916 and there were no proofs of any type minted between 1942 and 1950, your coin is a business strike suffering from environmental damage.
