I live in the Bay Area, California. I'm interested in attending a local coin auction, but I don't know how to find them. Can someone clue me in?

Auctions, at least here, are typically on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Our local auction houses advertise in the classified section of the local paper in the Friday edition and I would suggest you try that first. As you travel, watch for auction signs and contact them and see if they do estate auctions and coins in particular. When yhou find them, get there web address and ask to be put on their mailing list. Has worked for me.
