So, I have here a huge wad of cash.

The background is, after fifty-five years, my grandparents have found their house too much to keep up. They've moved, & we're all helping get the place ready to sell. Grandfather has a singular & deplorable habit of emptying his pockets onto any convenient flat surface, or into any convenient receptacle ; being the one in the family who can pick up coins off black pavement at night with no streetlamps, I've kept a weather eye out for money. In addition to a great mass of coins (the silver alone is over two pounds), I have so far found a few silver certificates, & a substantial quantity of Federal Reserve notes. I know there's more yet to find. My plan is to write him a cheque for the whole value, & make sure he puts it in the bank (I also found way too many undeposited cheques -- his retirement might be a good deal more comfortable if not for that).

Now, bearing in mind that these will be in circulated condition as they came out of his pocket, & many have severe creases from being folded for upwards of 40 years in some cases, & also that I don't collect FRNs, is there any of it that I am likely to be able to realize above face on, or should I just deposit the whole lump? Note that I checked for star notes (only found one), but not for cute serials or the like, as it is my impression that (aside from outright errors) these mostly add value to uncirculated notes.

Syntax is SERIES-DATE /BANK-LETTER QUANTITY

I'd cash in the 100's, 20's, 10's and 5's.

The $2 bills you could deposit them or spend them--some cashiers are likely to look at you funny since they haven't encounter one before.

The $1 bills I'd keep are the 1963B and the 1969D*. These aren't worth much over face, but are neat nonetheless.

Check the 1988-A, 1993 and 1995 $1 bills for Web notes. Those are worth more than face value.

This is just my breakdown of things...others might disagree with my assessment.

Additionally, I'd suggest keeping the small portraits (5's, 10's, 20's, 100's) that were before 1995/6. You don't find them that often (at all, for me).

Although they're not worth much over face, a good small portrait is still a good small portrait. I'd prefer one of them over a new bill any day.

Honestly, folks, I'm not much of a paper collector ; I'm not much of a US collector ; & I simply do not collect FRNs at all. If I can realize anything above face for any of them, then I'm going to do it. Otherwise, they're going back into circulation, by way either of my credit union or of my pocket.

If I want to look at "small portrait" American small-size currency, I have my $1, $5, & $10 Silver Certificates, $2 & $5 US Notes, & $5 & $10 National Bank Notes. And even of those I don't feel a pressing need to keep more than one of each type, as you can see from my "For Trade" post.

I don't know if Chris is interested anymore, but if he is, I made a great trade with him on a bill. I would recommend it.

if in good shape I would definetly buy all your 1995 $5's for over face, and will pay more than face for both the 1993 1's

I finally got around to checking the 1988A, 1993, & 1995 $1s for web notes, but no dice. All sheet-fed, mostly Fort Worth.
Oh well!
