That's sorta what I thought, but 1954 is a wheatback year... no memorial.

okay, so that doesn't match up. Any ideas as to what it is?I know this sounds crazy but does it look a little like the backside of a D?

The 1950's dies were used way past normal retirement. SO you find more off stuff during those years and more BIE's. The dies were kept in work like today if we demanded a 90 year old to keep up with his normal duty despite age. A lot of die wear/cracks/chips/breaks happened those years. More than any other decade.

Two tiny die chips connected by a short, thin die crack. This is a common area for die chips to develop.
