Hello,

I ran into an opportunity to purchase the attached bar of gold.

Usually, I avoid these types of shapes when buying gold because of the possibility of finding tungsten within.

I wish I had access to one of those hand held fluoroscopic x-ray detectors for precious metal detecting which would make the verification process simple and straight forward.

1) Anyhow, please explain what karat of gold this bar should have.

2) What would be the least costly and accurate means of determining both the weight of gold and corresponding karat designation etc.?

3) Would contacting Credit Suisse and giving them the serial number assist me to determine what exactly I have here?

4) Is this type of information for this gold's descriptive narrative readily available on-line?

5)) Also, I only now own acid for testing 10k gold, 14k gold, 18k gold and platinum.

Could the acid used for testing platinum also be used for for testing 24k gold should the answer to 1) above be that this bar should be 24k gold?

6) Would it be necessary to drill into this bar, collect the resulting shavings and then melt them into a button for subsequent acid testing of some type?

Thanks for the advise.

XRF won't help you with this one.
It's only good for examining the surface.
If it has a tungsten core and heavily pure gold plated, XRF will find pure gold.

Neutron activation analysis ain't any good either. You need about 1/20 of a gram sample off it for the test. The tiny drill hole to extract a sample will show up. The test would be way too expensive anyway.

I do not know if a magnetic flux test is available for this sort of application.

That leaves you with ultrasonic analysis to search for a suspected tungsten core.

call credit suisse or buy from a good source as your out too much. The tungsten bars were on larger more expensive bars than this 10 grammer.
