Good day to everyone. Over the past several years I have cracked open a number of NGC holders and sent the raw coins to PCGS for crossing. I have only cracked a few out NGC or PCGS and sent them back in to try and have them upgraded. A couple I resent in twice (unfortunately to no avail). At the beginning of the year I was looking for a particular PCGS Walking Liberty in a high grade with a population at that time of 12. After a decent amount of searching on the web I was able to find only 5 that had recently sold or they were on a dealer's website. I know a few are in collector's hands; however, my question is what percentage of the top three grading services populations do you believe no longer exist due to cross overs, upgrading, etc. ?

Secondly, any ideas how the services can verify their populations without everyone sending them back in for grading?

Just my thoughts:

PCGS: 7%
NGC: 14%
ANACS:20%

Grading services could set up a website asking us to submit a current inventory with the coin number. DOn't know how accurate , but at least I am sure it will be closer that what they have now.

I have to agree with you that PCGS probably is the closest to being correct. I know of many, many ( maybe, just maybe, myself included) people that have CRACKED OUT a few NGC, ANACS, IGC, SGS, etc. and sent them to PCGS hoping for that higher grade. I also know a few collectors (?) that have CRACKED OUT PCGS and resubmitted to PCGS, hoping for the elusive upgrade and therefore "MO MONEY". Percentages escape me.

PB, I would agree with your estimates as far as slabbed coins go. I would rely heavily on a club census performed by JRCS, BHNC, LCSC, EAC, Fly-In, and other specialty clubs when defining a coin's overall rarity, condition, and population accurately. IMO, the PCGS/NGC pop reports are only accurate the moment they are published then they are obsolete. You also have a majority of "rare" pieces that remain unslabbed b/c the collectors do not foresee selling in the near future and will slab only when it is time to sell so coins will get the "market grade" and realize max $$. Most coins on the current market are the same ones that are cycled in and out of new holders. Coins true to their assigned grade are hard to come by and usually privately held as stated in your case with the Walking Liberty.

At one time, PCGS gave incentives (I don't recall exactly what they were/are) for those who returned the tags from cracked slabs in order to adjust their pop report. Recently, a CA dealer returned over 100,000 tags and donated his incentive to the ANA.

Here is an interesting article by Winters regarding this subject.

Benji: I appreciate this note. I guess it just confirms what I thought to be true. Thanks, Al
