I have purchased roughly 550,000 worth in various denominations. Was wondering if anyone else ventured down that path? I honestly don't expect any kind of return, if any at all(maybe 10 years from now?). Just a neat looking set of notes and fun to collect.

I hope that you mean 550,000 of cheap foreign iraq currency. I have no idea what that is worth.

But if you do mean.. you spent $550,000 USD on Iraq currency and don't expect any kind of return...Can I be on your Christmas list. LOL

LOL, god no...I paid roughly $500.00 usd for 550,000 worth of the new Iraq Currency. LOL, when I was reading your reply, I was thinking I completely messed up my description. It does appear mis-leading. Sorry about that.

I went out of my way to buy all the old currency including the 10,000 dinar. Probably will never be worth much but the hunt was fun and I am sure they won't be making any more of them!

While I was over in Kuwait/Iraq in 1999, I picked up a 25,000 dinar note (mint uncirculated)w/ good old Saddam pic on it. The new currency is very nice looking.

Got a very good email update today.

Believe me, I am not banking on this stuff to make me rich. However, that would be hilarious if it does!

to really invest in the iraqi dinar, you'd have to do it electronically at a forex site, (like forex.com), similar to buying/selling stocks. if you load up on paper money, there's a good chance you'll be left with stacks of worthless paper when iraq's dinar is strong enough to start lopping off the extra 0's at the end. romania's new currency, for example, is now 10 leu = 100,000 old lei. if you have stacks of the old money saved up, you have a short period of time to exchange it into the new money.

problem 1: finding a place to exchange your old money to new money
problem 2: finding a place to exchange your new money into dollars

you have to be optimistic and think positive, if worst came to worst and their value went way down then in that case I think people would burn them from anger, and then what you will have will be the only remaining notes and will be so rare. ;) you will never know, buy the way in early 1990's I heard a guy in the neighborhood burned maybe 10kilos of iraqi notes after they went down to value to nothing! he was a merchant.
anyways, that was a thought about the future :)

To be 1000% honest, I don't really worry about it. I have always said since before purchase, if I end up with useless paper that they will become a conversation piece. Luckily for me I have people over seas (Kuwait, Saudi, etc..) that would be able to exchange my bills if it really came down to that. I thought about opening an acct with Warka, but I just couldn't bare the thought about losing THAT money.

At the time of posting this thread, and using XE.com, 1 Iraqi Dinar = .00009 AUSD...
You do the math.

Personally, they're nothing more than coffee cup coasters.

At the moment you are right TenorBb, their weight as paper would worth even more in an European country.

However in some cases these currency can gain value within a few years. As Iraq is quite unstable these days, you never knoýw what happens next year, whose face will be on the notes. They may gain value economically-which is almost impossible if you ask me, or they can be discontinued and become somehow rare.

Don't forget the enjoyment of haveing the notes in your collection for as long as you decide to keep them.
