Lucky find, I purchased a lot of nickels and this was one of them. I was very confused when I found a 1944 with no MM so I looked it up and found the history of Mr. Henning. Very interesting.

What's the story of this coin and Mr.Henning. Was he contracted as a private mint during the war?

No, a post-war counterfeiter. Article.

Quote: Was he contracted as a private mint during the war? Nope, he was a counterfeiter and made counterfeit nickles.

Very nice find! Quote: Since when is a person famous for faking nickels. Did the feds ever catch up to him? Read the link Sap posted. Quote: When caught, Henning was sentenced to 3 years in jail, and had to pay a $5,000 fine.

Are you sure it isn't just a weekly struck mint mark from a worn die?

Now I'm going to have to go through all my nickels from CRH, I forgot all about those! One question though, do all of the years that he counterfeit these nickels have the looped "R"? Great find! By the way,

Congratulations on the find ... this appears to be indeed a Henning 1944 counterfeit Jefferson. We have had many show up here at the CCF ... and the same questions being posed now are always asked ... Back in late 2009 there were several that made an appearance ... and the following thread summarizes quite well IMHO our (then) experts views on the Henning nickels: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=53117Congratulations again on the find ... I have never found one at 304,800 nickels searched ... perhaps someday. David
