I have recently bought this from a friend who owns his own gold/silver shop. He mostly deals in coins and says this is a 50/50 on whether this is legit or not. For the price, I took a gamble.

My main issue at first was the "S". After some looking, I found that there is 4 places where the S can lie below the 1909 and is it really close to one of them. My main concern is whether it is a proper S.

I get that the coin is well over 100 years and with age and wear and tear the S can fade or flatten out a bit, but this one seems a little off. I hope it is just me and I get lucky.

I've looked into sending it in to Anacs to have it graded and legitimized, but the problem is, that if they find it to be fake, they'll keep it. I'd rather live with the mystery.

This site made me scale the pictures down so if a larger file and more clear photo would help, I'm more than glad to email you!

Looks fake, it seems too big IMO. I've never seen a mint mark that looks like that on a penny before

When my friend said it was a 50/50, he said what probably happened was someone took a 1909 vdb and stamped a decent S on it. I'm afraid that is what has happened here.

The VDB looks correct but the S is off, the real one is nice and tight and this one looks smushy for the rest of the surface being in good shape.

The "S" looks funny.

If you send a coin to to the TPG's, and they deem it "questionable authenticity" (counterfeit), the coin will be returned to you. How else can you recover your money from the person or dealer you bought it from?

The "S" does not look right, could very well be an altered coin. Does the area around the mint mark look dished or indented at all?

I know some people will disagree with me, but with high profile keys or expensive coins, I would only buy slabbed. This way you don't second guess your purchase..

Are you sure that anacs and who ever else mails them back? They don't send em off to get destroyed or something? Even if it is fake, for what I paid I'd still like to keep it. Didn't give much for it. I'll still it in my penny loafers. Hah!

TPG typically state "Questionable Authenticity" and return the coin (or counterfeit). In this case, there would be no reason for them not to return it to you since it's not a counterfeit coin, it's a coin with an added mintmark.

Save your money with ANACS or any other TPG. The mintmark on this Lincoln is not remotely close to the real deal. I won't get started on your "friend" who owns the shop because there's no 50/50 about it. It's an arms length fake to anybody who's ever seen a genuine 1909-S VDB.

That "S" looks too big and too close to the rim IMHO. I would say it is an added mintmark.

Also to CCF!

S is wrong and I think the VDB is larger than it should be.
