I recently came across a BU 1950-D Jefferson nickel in an online dealers' stock. He is willing to sell it for $20, think that's a fair price?

I know this is one of the most popular "key dates" of the Jefferson series, and one I need for my set.

The nickel in question has almost 4 1/2 steps, great eye appeal, and only a few contact marks.

I trust this dealer; he is highly recommended and sounds reputable. Think this sounds good?

To buy, or not to buy, that is the question

If you ebay you can probably do better but you can always try and talk down your dealer too.

Thanks for the info, 52Raymo.

I may not buy this coin, just wanted to see what the guys here had to say. I may try ebay, there are some on there better than the one I found, but I may also pick up a 50-D at a coin show or shop. I like to actually "see" the coin I'm buying.

You can probably do much better on ebay. Frankly, no way I'd pay $20 for it unless you're sure it's at least MS65.

50-D's are pretty easy to find in BU. So don't be afraid to take your time, there will be plenty to look at.

Wow! $20 is full retail money and then some for that coin and I would not do that. I've sold a 1950-D MS-65 in the last three months for $9.00 and it like the one you described was not FS (Full Steps) or even NFS (Near Full Steps). As best I recall it had 3 full steps. This date in MS-65 but NOT FS tends to sell for $8 to $14 depending on eye appeal
